What is wear protection?

To get reliable protection against aggressive attacks, you need the right kind of armour – both in nature and in process engineering.

Wear protection is a measure to improve the resistance of an industrial plant component to the forces and loads acting on it.

Wear

Wear is a term that describes the progressive loss of material from the surface of a solid body. It is the result of contact with and relative motion between different materials, be they in solid, liquid, or gaseous form. Wear can manifest in a variety of ways, such as abrasion, erosion, damage, or deformation.

In industry, solid materials, such as ores, gravel, shale, sand, biomass, etc., lead to continuous wear on plant components. Recurring shutdowns result in increased expenditure for maintenance and spare parts.

Wear protection materials

Kalenborn manufactures mineral, ceramic, and metallic materials, as well as wear-resistant concrete and technical plastics for precision linings that protect against wear.

No two wear problems are exactly alike. Determinant wear factors in industrial plants include the material throughput as well as grain size, -shape and grain hardness. The stress loading also plays a major role: In continuously operated plant components such as cyclones, abrasive wear is most prevalent.

Equipment used in batch operations, such as mixers, silos and chutes, must also withstand the loading and discharge process. Operating temperature is also a factor in the selection of the right wear protection material.

Wear protection installation

To develop the optimal wear protection system for a plant component, our experienced employees often recommend combining different materials. Those materials are then matched to the different loadings. The selection of a suitable means of installation is also important. Different parameters such as temperature, vibration or accessibility in the plant require different methods for mounting the wear protection elements.

Kalenborn: Experts for industrial wear protection

We protect systems where materials are moved

We manufacture wear-resistant materials and develop custom-fit linings to protect system components from wear. In this way, we ensure the flow of materials and increase the service life of the system components.

With special lining processes, our customers can reuse their system parts. This saves resources in the steel structure and reduces CO2 emissions.
